Moonis Elahi entered politics in 2008 and was elected as a member of the Provincial Assembly of Punjab on a Pakistan Muslim League (Q) ticket. The election was won by Gujrat, and he served on the Commerce and Investment standing committee from 2008 to 2013.
In the 2013 general elections, Hecontested from PP-110 (Gujrat-III) and was elected as a member of the Provincial Assembly.
Elahi was re-elected as a member of the National Assembly on a ticket of the Pakistan Muslim League (Q) from NA-69(Gujrat-II) in the 2018 general election. He received 65,759 votes and defeated Imran Zafar, a candidate of PMLN.

During his father’s tenure as Punjab’s Chief Minister in 2010, He was accused of conspiracy to commit corruption that involved Rs 320 million. According to Elahi, these charges were unfounded.
In the end, the prosecution was unable to prove the case, he was acquitted in 2011 and all charges were dropped.
